4/19/25 April 19, 2026 will be the fiftieth anniversary of my first daily cartoon, pre-internet while a sophomore in high school in pencil on blue-ruled three-hole-punched notebook paper. And I can't help noting on this occasion, the forty-ninth anniversary, that my two most formative influences in comic strip art at the time I started, Charles M. Schulz and Johnny Hart, each failed to live to their signature works' fiftieth anniversaries by less than a year. But y'know, stipulating superstition, what am I supposed to do? Stop? Ever since I started drawing the daily comic strips on the blue-lined notebook paper, all I ever really wanted was to draw a cartoon every day that got read around the world and made people laugh. I have that now and have had it for over twenty years. I have all I ever really wanted. Life's like a movie. Write your own ending. Keep believing, keep pretending.
